Bus Drivers and their Motor Vehicle Record (Driving Record)

I was curious to know how other transportation departments choose to hire a bus driver in regards to their driving record?  For example, if a perspective bus driver had a speeding ticket, 2 years ago, would you hire them? Does your department use a "driving record matrix" when hiring or does the person hiring the drivers go by "what they feel"?

We look at how many points a driver has and whether or not they have had a DWI. A CDL in Texas is suspended at 10 points, so if someone comes in we more than 6 points, they are usually passed up on getting a job offer. In Texas, even if you are not at fault, you recieve 2 points.
Also in Texas, they have a surcharge for points above 6. I forgot how much it is, but it is charge I believe that reoccur every year. If the licensee does not pay that surcharge their license is suspended.
In Texas, if you possess a CDL, you cannot take defensive driving courses to remove those points off your record, even if you got that ticket in your personnal vehicle.
I firmly believe that the way a person drives in their personal vehicle, does not dictate how they would drive a bus.

We review the drivers record. If was to show 1 speed tick in 2 years and nothing other....he would get an interview. In today's world it would not be hard to get hit with a ticket. I would like to hear the story first hand on the ticket.

If it was more that 1 issue like a ticket & acc or 2 tickets ......would not get an interview. After 40+ years in school buses.....feeling has a lot to do with it for sure. You get to a point good & bad is easy to spot.
